• Quarantunes at The Fret Shop

The beautiful melodies swirl around the stone fireplace and over the worn wooden floors. They float across the strings of violins and over the upright bass that is taller than I am. Each talented musician plays her instrument of choice and dazzles their internet audience with the gift of music. This is a weird time. A virus has taken hold of the world and we, humankind collectively, have been asked to stay at home. We are supposed to live as normally as possible, but then again, we aren’t allowed to hang out with people. However, musicians have found a way to stay connected and bring us all together, virtually. Many…

  • A Weekend in the Rocket City

Hundreds of miles from Launch Pad 39A at Cape Canaveral, lies Huntsville, Alabama. Just an unassuming cotton town it has turned into a hub of rocketry and innovation. Huntsville was nicknamed the Rocket City because of its role in designing, building, and testing the Saturn V rocket that carried man to the moon. As of 2019, the Saturn V rocket, classified as a super heavy-lift launch vehicle, remains the heaviest, tallest, and most powerful rocket ever commercially used. The Saturn V is also the only vehicle to carry humans beyond Low Earth Orbit, defined as an altitude of 1,200 miles or less, approximately the same distance as driving from New…

  • Get Lost at Ave Maria Grotto

Tucked away in Cullman, Alabama, is a true artistic gem. Ave Maria Grotto was the brainchild of Brother Joseph Zoetl, a Benedictine monk at St. Bernard Abbey. Brother Joseph moved to St. Bernard Abbey from Landshut, Bavaria in 1892. In his spare time, he used found and donated material to create miniature replicas of many of the world’s most famous buildings, sites, and monuments. 125 total structures grace a winding 2-block path through the gardens. The use of broken glass, stones, and seemingly random objects create these one-of-a-kind works of art. Take an afternoon to walk the 2 square blocks of the grotto, there are so many small details to…

Here are my picks for the best antique stores in Huntsville, Alabama. • 600-Mile Yard Sale

The 600-Mile Yard Sale has been on my mama’s to-do list for a long time and this year it finally worked out.  Treasure hunting is a skill we share and love, so it was special to have this weekend together. The first weekend in August features sales along 690 miles of rural highway from Gadsden, Alabama to Addison, Michigan. We started our 600-mile yard sale journey in Chattanooga and headed south.  The route from Chattanooga to Gadsden is a mess of twists and turns on different rural highways.  The directions are quite difficult to follow as you can’t put a destination in the map on your phone.  There are no…

  • Huntsville's Women in Music Lineup

    Women in Music Weekend

Downtown Huntsville Inc. has created a weekend long celebration of Women in Music.  This weekend will feature nearly 30 different shows/concerts in 20+ locations around downtown Huntsville.  The singers hail from Huntsville, Birmingham, Nashville, Austin, and beyond. With four days of free music, in venues all over downtown, this event offers something for everyone.  Many of the locations are kid and puppy friendly, including the breweries, so it’s an event for the whole family. Music has such a powerful hold on me, a single song can completely transform a mood, a moment.  I’m a terrible singer, always have been, but I’m also not afraid to sing along to incredible songs (just cover…

  • Muscle Shoals Sound Studio

When you think of music hubs in the South, Nashville and Memphis come to mind, but few know about Muscle Shoals in northwest Alabama.  The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is home to some of the greatest songs ever recorded. Artists such as Bob Dylan, Bob Segar, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, Art Garfunkel, Willie Nelson, and Cat Stevens recorded hits at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio during it’s operation from 1969-1978.  My personal favorite just might be Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones! Located at 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield, Alabama, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio has been fully restored to her former glory and can be toured for only $15.…
